A Year Of Helping Curly Girls And A Heart Full Of Gratitude

A Year Of Helping Curly Girls
And A Heart Full Of Gratitude

I haven’t written a blog post since last June…I am so sorry! Time flew by so fast and events in life and business took priority…that is until Covid-19 hit and I’ve had the opportunity to attend to many things I haven’t had time for this past year. I thought it would be fun to do a recap of all the things I did in 2019, and it may also explain why I have been lacking in the blogging department! This blog article was really cathartic for me to write. Sometimes I feel like I am not doing enough, but if I go back and read this I realize I am doing more than I think.

Thanks for sticking around here with me, following and supporting me.  I really appreciate you.  You are why I keep working so hard and what makes my heart feel full at the end of the day (in this case, the whole year!).  Make sure to catch me on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Pinterest, as I am always putting out new content to help you with your waves and curls.

Click on each title below and it will expand into a mini story of 2019 in review; the first one is already expanded for you…

I made the decision to focus on carrying only Canadian made product lines even in 2018, but started talking more about it early last year.  As much as I love all my American brands, I wanted to do my part as a small business owner to support more Canadian businesses.  Especially in this political climate we have, it’s even more important to shop local.  I encourage you wherever you are in the world to shop local as much as you can!  If you want to check out my online store, click here!  www.curlyhairgoodies.com is up and running, shipping weekly on Mondays exclusively in Canada.  If you’re in other parts of the world, you can still use my online store as a search engine to look up products I recommend for your curl type! I have tagged everything for you based on wavy, curly, super curly, 2a, 3b, 4c, etc.

My online course, Curls With Confidence, got a big makeover and facelift! Everything got prettied up and launched with a big advertisement inside CURL Magazine this past year! To date, there are almost 1,000 curly girls who have taken my online courses. They enjoy an active curly community on Facebook as a bonus to buying the online course.

Recently since Covid-19 hit, I’ve made a mini-version of my course and launched it for only $27 CDN (less than $20 USD) to help anyone low on cash still be able to learn how to work with their curls.  The special sale price is available until midnight EST May 30th.  Click here to learn more.

This event was a complete success, raising almost $4,000 for Dawn House Women’s Shelter and we were able to gather and donate a minivan FULL of toilet paper! If you want to see the full album of pictures from this amazing event, please click here!

About 160 tickets were sold and it was so much fun.  Curly girls have been asking when the next one will be, and if we can make it bigger and a full day event.  Nothing is planned in future, but if there is interest I will certainly consider it! A big thank you to all my wonderful volunteers (who donated time and supplies and I couldn’t have pulled this off without their help), the vendors (who also donated 10% of sales the day of the event to Dawn House!) and guest artists (who came and joined me on stage for curly hair demos, Q&A and left us with tons of great information).

Guests of the Curly Girl Connection event!

I was invited to teach all about cutting and styling curls at The Seahorse Salon  in St. John’s, NFLD in November last year. You can find them on Instagram as @theseahorsesalon

It was a wonderful opportunity for me to practice my teaching skills, in preparation for the curl specific training I will start offering at my salon in Kingston, ON hopefully later this year (crossing my fingers!).

I will soon be launching the class information with dates TBD. Keep an eye on my social media for the announcement, and sign up here to be notified first when it launches.

Teaching Hair Stylists at The Seahorse Salon in St. John’s, NFLD.

I travel to Fredericton, NB about once a year to take care of my curly clients in the Maritimes. While I am not sure what this fall may bring for travel with Covid-19, I hope to get back there again as soon as I am able.

If you’re interested in a haircut service with me in NB, please email me at curlspecialist@gmail.com with the subject title “NEW FREDERICTON CLIENT”. Be sure to leave me your contact details incase I have room for new clients in future.

Here’s some of my Fredericton Curly girls fresh after their haircuts.  Did you know the Maritimes is “home” for me? Yep, I grew up there which is why I love travelling back there. Being a Mom to three young kids I am still needed at home, so travelling other cities is not an option right now. Someday I’d love to marry travel, training Hair Stylists and cutting hair into some sort of working vacation. If you can dream it, you can do it!

I was asked to be one of four Featured Stylists for CURL Magazine in 2019/2020 and of course I jumped in with both feet! I also served on the Advisory Board and the Stylist Panel and still continue to support the magazine when asked to contribute to articles or write. I love educating about styling and maintaining curly hair. It’s been a great honour to serve the curly community through this magazine this past year. I encourage you to subscribe so you can enjoy amazing content! It really is a quality magazine, and it’s only in it’s second year of publication. It will make a great gift for Mother’s Day this year; awesome for any occasion or just because, and it’s for curly girls of any age.

If you got this far, thanks for reading what I’ve been up to this past year.  I’ve reached a lot of professional goals I had set for myself, and it feels really great to be able to do that AND serve others at the same time.  I feel so lucky to do this all for a living. My heart is SO full with gratitude.

I’ll catch up with you on social media soon, k!?

Yours in curls,

xo Krista

Webinar 2: The Moisture Misconception

Webinar 2: The Moisture Misconception

Last month I recorded a second webinar with Dr. Susan Walker of Earthtones Naturals; the second webinar in a three part series.  It’s filled to the brim with curly hair education on the topic of moisture, specifically speaking to humidity, glycerin, oils, and so much more.  There’s information on what ingredients will seal in the moisture and keep out the humidity, now that we know summer is on its way in Canada.  If you’d like to catch the replay, grab yourself a cup of tea or glass of wine and set aside some time to educate yourself on the science around moisture and haircare.  You will come away with great tips on how to manage your waves and curls, and learn what you can do to get it moisturized and KEEP it moisturized.

Later this month we hope to complete our third and final webinar in this FREE series; date to be announced so keep an eye on my social media.  We’ll share how to read ingredient labels and teach you how to choose the right products for your hair. What I love about these webinars is that they are non-brand specific. We really want you empower you to understand your hair and hope that you’ll share these webinars with your wavy and curly haired friends so they can learn too! Direct them to curlspecialist on Youtube to find them, or forward this email.

Also, I’ve written two articles for CURL Magazine that I’m looking forward to you reading later this month!  If you haven’t subscribed to this digital (and in print) magazine, definitely do it!  It’s such a lovely magazine to have not only to read yourself, but to be able to find in salons. I’d even suggest asking your stylist to get it for in their waiting room at the salon!  You’ll finally find pictures of true naturally curly hair, and examples of haircuts to choose from from curl specialists like myself and my talented colleagues that you can relate to.

Stay tuned for Q&A series on my YouTube channel with all the topics you’ve told me you’d love to hear about! It’s starting soon…

Until next time,

xo Krista

Webinar 1: The Protein MisConception

Webinar 1: The Protein Misconception

If you’re as confused as every other curly girl out there about the ingredient “protein”, then you are not alone. This month, your blog article is actually in the form of a webinar!  Filmed by Dr. Susan Walker and myself; you’re taken through a full presentation with Q&A on proteins, protein sensitivity, and so much more.  This was originally done live, but we’ve recorded it because we knew it would just be so valuable and jam packed with information you need to hear.  This webinar was the first in a series we’d like to do to help educate others about naturally curly and textured hair.

Curly Kids Hair Care Routine

A curly girl and her Mama

Two out of three of my kids are curly, and I often have parents/guardians ask me what to do with their curly kids hair.  I thought I’d share with you some tips to help you at home since curly hair can sometimes be a mystery, especially to straight haired parents of curly hair kids.  Let’s get right down to it!

Things you will need (feel free to support a small business and order any of the products or accesories I mention in this blog here if you live within Canada)

~Sulfate free Shampoo ( like DevaCurl No Poo, Jessicurl Hair Cleansing Cream, Fuzzy Duck Shampoo & Body Wash)

~Silicone Free Conditioner ( like DevaCurl One Condition, Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner, Fuzzy Duck Kids Conditioner)

~Silicone Free Detangler ( optional-like DevaCurls No Comb Detangler, Fuzzy Duck Leave in Conditioner & Detangler)

~REALLY Wide Toothed Comb ( or use your fingers)

~Fine Mist Spray Bottle

~Large Old long sleeved t-shirt

~Satin Pillowcase (a MUST!)

~Satin scrunchie, one-tie hair elastics, Buff or hair tube

~Gel or Styler ( Optional-like DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel, Jessicurl Spiralicious, Fuzzy Duck Kids Gel) nice to use for special occasions and events, or for tweens who are starting to want to style their hair)

With young active curly kids, it’s best to get their hair fully wet and detangled about every two days.  This keeps the detangle-and-crying sessions to a minimum if you can keep on top of the rats nests that like to grow in their hair.   As they get older and can start maintaining their own curls (12 and up), they can add a few more days of spritzing before they need to wash again.  Until then, you are primary curl-giver and they need your guidance, so here’s what you do…
